Just under three months after the NHL’s Winter Classic, the league is holding another outdoor hockey game… the Heritage Classic. This year, the Calgary Flames will host the Montreal Canadiens (Habs) on Feb 20th, 2011.
The success of the Winter Classic on New Year’s day was tremendous. There were nearly 35 million viewers which made the Winter Classic the NHL’s highest rated regular season game in over 30 years.
The Heritage Classic could see similar numbers. Hockey comes first in Canada… it’s like baseball, football and basketball in America… but all in one.
In 2003, More than 57,000 fans packed the Commonwealth Stadium to see the Oilers and Canadiens play the Heritage Classic. Boy was that a cold day to play. The outdoor stadium showed readings of -16 to -19 degrees.
Flames fans, Canadiens fans and fans of hockey in general will pack the stadium to watch history.
